Late last year, we ran into two young adventurers, Ren Yung and Adrien Desbaillets, in Singapore as they were preparing for a trek across India to raise funds for charity.
The pair planned to travel from Jaisalmer to Kochi, a journey that took them 3,000 km (1,800 miles) across terrain ranging from the arid northwest to the lush southern coast.
Not only did Ren and Adrien accomplish this in just 14 days, they made the trip while riding a “tuk tuk” – the three-wheeled auto rickshaws that are common throughout Asia and Africa.
When we heard about this ambitious plan, we asked how we could help. To ease their hardship a bit, we gave Ren and Adrien an HTC One X+ and an HTC 8X Windows phone, along with battery packs to guarantee enough power to get them through remote and under-developed areas.
Yung was particularly impressed with with the phone’s multitasking abilities. “The HTC was such an amazing phone to be on the go with: intuitive, a beautiful interface, and with the ability to edit and upload photos and blog posts while changing gear at the same time! The wide angle view of the lens was impressive as well as the automatic colour correction.”
“Thank you HTC for enabling us to capture colour in our journey and share it with the world.”
Our Better World, a site that features people who are changing lives, were a crucial part of telling their story. They were constantly helping the duo upload the photos and blog posts they were creating with their HTCs, helping get the word out.
In the end, the two not only made the journey safely and successfully, they raised more than $35,000 Singaporean dollars (US$27,000) to help out four charities, each with a different focus: water, play, education, and nature.
The pair said the phones were also a hit among the people they met during their adventure, with many admiring the screen and photo quality and sturdy designs. While India’s 67 million smartphone users make it the 5th-biggest smartphone market in the world, that represents just 6 percent of the country’s mobile users, compared to well over 50 percent in places like the United States and Japan, according to recent research.
Of course, they were also pleased that they were able to put their HTC phones to good use by using mapping services to keep them on course, and by letting them easily capture gorgeous photos that you can see on their Facebook page.
