Nokia is still working on that rumoured Android prototype, according to reports.
Following Microsoft’s buyout of Windows Phone partner Nokia we recently heard reports that both companies had been working on “Plan B” options, with Microsoft developing its own Surface Phone and Nokia messing around with Google’s Android platform running on Lumia hardware. This was all reported by the New York Times.
It was assumed by many (including KYM), that these projects had been scrapped, or at the very least the Android dabbling had been stamped on and possibly the Surface Phone being handed over to the now Microsoft-owned Nokia engineers.
Apparently that isn’t actually the case, as a new report from reputable Chinese source CTechnology claims Nokia is still working on the project. For context, Nokia’s research and development for its Android prototype, apparently codenamed “Mountain View”, is based in the company’s Beijing facilities.
The report alleges that Nokia’s testing is in such an advanced stage that it has created 10,000 test units, it says development is ongoing and more test units are being created by Foxconn. It’s said that the project is planned to continue until November, when Nokia shareholders are expected to officially approve Microsoft’s acquisition. Could Microsoft let it slide after that and continue to allow development of a Nokia ‘droid? Seems unlikely, but we can dream.
While most of the specs and details have remained a mystery, the report confirms the Mountain View prototype uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor in a bid to keep costs down.
