Motorola Moto G to launch alongside Nexus 5?

Motorola's affordable Moto G could be launching soon alongside the Nexus 5

Motorola recently filed a trademark for “Moto G”, leading to suggestions that the handset maker could be prepping a global launch of a Moto X style device.

According to PhoneArena, a poster on the Chinese social network Weibo has heard from a source “close to Google’s wholly owned subsidiary,” who claims the Moto G is the rumoured Motorola DVX, a low-cost smartphone with interchangeable back covers and which appears to be a smaller version of the Moto X.

Reports say that Motorola is preparing to launch the Moto G globally, rather than restricting sales to the US as it did with the Moto X. It has a 4.5-inch display and is believed to be aiming for the $200-250 bracket SIM-free.

While trademarking the Moto G name on October 15 would be cutting it a bit fine, there are rumours claiming Google is planning to launch the Moto G alongside the flagship Nexus 5, which is said to be arriving around October 28.

At this stage we know very little else about the device and its capabilities. Being a budget offering, it seems unlikely it will have the same functionality as the Moto X. With interchangeable back panels there’s no need for Motorola’s Motomaker ordering system for customisation and it’s been suggested the handset may be sold via Google Play, though we’d also expect it to retail through third-party stores and on network tariffs too.
