Nokia could be working on a smartwatch if leaked pictures are to be believed

Pictures have leaked online of a device alleged to be a Nokia Smartwatch current in development.

The snaps, which appeared via Chinese source CtechCN, do not show very much at all and could easily be fakes. What we appear to be able to see is a possible prototype chassis.

It’s got Nokia’s logo on it and has a concave back panel which would sit well on a person’s wrist. There also appear to be ‘tabs’ on either side which could be designed to attach to a wrist strap. The pictures, as you can see, are very close-up shots so it’s difficult to get an idea of what the whole device looks like, but it also seems there is no hole on the front for a display panel to be inserted into – again suggesting this may be some kind of preliminary mock-up rather than a working device.

Another thing which could suggest these images are faked is teh fact that the holes for the watch-strap are wonky and unevenly spaced – not exactly in keeping with Nokia’s clean precision engineering, although again it could just be a mock-up.

It’s been rumoured for a little while now that Microsoft has a smartwatch project, could these images mean that since its acquisition of Nokia the project has been handed over? Quite what operating system the smartwatch would run is anybody’s guess but with Microsoft now at the helm it would more than likely be some version of Windows Phone.

Whether these particular snaps are real or not, it’s probable that Microsoft and/or Nokia are working on smartwatch products as everyone and their dogs appear to have a smartwatch project in the pipeline, including Google, Samsung, Motorola, Qualcomm, Sony and Apple, amongst others. Analysts predict smartwatch shipments could cap 373 million globally by 2020.
