EE is reportedly censoring image hosting site imgur.com for users of its 4G services.
According to a post on EE’s official community site by user Toliver182, EE is prohibiting access on its 4G connections to imgur.com and any images hosted by the site.
This has been highlighted as contradictory to EE’s statement on its own website that it does not block access to any legal website, only illegal ones.
As far as can be ascertained, nothing has occurred to push imgur.com into the illegal category, but it is being restricted nonetheless.
Toliver182 posted the following screengrab from EE’s site which states its policy of not blocking legitimate sites.
He then got in touch with the Internet Watch Foundation via Twitter, which confirmed it has not blacklisted imgur.com and suggests any problem with accessing the site or its content lies with EE.
An exchange of emails between Toliver182 and EE’s executive office has confirmed that the company is blocking imgur.com.
“I confirm access is currently restricted for the imgur web site,” reads the response from an EE representative. “As discussed, I am unable to provide information as to why this is or if this will be reviewed in the future.”
“All routes have been exhausted in trying to obtain this information on your behalf. Unfortunately, this is a business decision and does not allow you to end your agreement without penalty.”
According to Toliver182’s post, the block only affects users on EE’s T-Mobile network, not on Orange, but EE users can be assigned to T-Mobile in instances where a 4G connection can’t be maintained, for example if a mast is out of range.
“http://imgur.com is an image host," reports Toliver182, “it provides most of the content for http://reddit.com.”
“It’s also worth noting that the list of websites that have been court ordered to be blocked in the UK are still accessible using EE,” he says, “I have not received an adequate response or solution from EE. I will be making an application to CISAS (Communications and Internet Services Adjudication Scheme.)”
