The Costumes of Miss Universe

The Miss Universe international beauty contest (@missuniverse) kicks off Saturday night at Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Russia. Contestants representing 86 countries will compete in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and interview. Founded in 1952 by California clothing company Pacific Mills, the pageant has since become a global event. Hundreds of millions of people in over 80 countries watch it each year to cheer on their country’s contestant.
Although the official event begins on Saturday night, the costume show—perhaps the most vibrant part of the contest—took place last Sunday night. Contestants showcased elaborate costumes representative of their countries. Some highlights include:
- Miss USA (@missusa)’s Transformer outfit
- Miss Brazil (@jaakelyne)’s cape cloaked in murals
- Miss Costa Rica (@fabianagranados)’s pink feather-clad bodysuit
- Miss France (@hinarani)’s Eiffel Tower one piece
- Miss Netherlands (@stephanietency)’s vertical cape adorned with windmills
- Miss Venezuela (@mollysler)’s bedazzled cowgirl suit
- Miss South Africa (@marilyn_za)’s flag-print cape
