BlackBerry hasn’t been having the best time lately but finally some good news for the manufacturer has come through. The US Department of Defense has ordered 80,000 BlackBerry handsets. That’s a big pay day for the manufacturer and a lot of trust from the government.
The Department of Defense is undertaking a smartphone expansion strategy and thought it would treat itself to a few BlackBerry handsets but it didn’t reveal what handsets will be included.
It did reveal, however, that it would be buying 1800 other mobile devices for its employees including Apple iPad 3's, iPad 4's, iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 handsets and tablets, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets, and Samsung Galaxy S3 and Motorola RAZR smartphones.
The big order has clearly helped out John Chen and co as BlackBerry’s share prices have jumped up. The stocks peaked at $10 each following the reveal, while before Christmas they sat at $7.
It’s thought BlackBerry is the manufacturer of choice for the Department of Defense as the handsets offer enhanced security features. In May last year, the entire BlackBerry 10 family of devices were certified to meet the US government’s security standards.
President Barack Obama openly fought to keep his BlackBerry even though he was told he wasn’t allowed a mobile phone whilst in office. Even though he got his wish of keeping the BlackBerry, Obama has said he wants an Apple iPhone but his security advisors have refused him the device.
After a miserable 2013 for the company, BlackBerry announced a deal with Foxconn to create a budget range of smartphones for emerging markets. We here at Know Your Mobile are hoping BlackBerry can fight against the odds and make 2014 a successful year for the manufacturer. Only time will tell.
