The money is still coming in for iOS. Apple’s operating system still brings in more money for advertisers and app makers than Android. But Android handsets sales are dwarfing those of the iPhone and a new report shows Android’s ad impressions have finally overtaken those from iPhones.
According to data collected by research firm Opera, the Apple iPad means iOS is still generating more revenue than the Android platform.
In the previous report for Q2 2013, the platforms were at the same point sharing 30% of smartphone traffic. Since then, Q4 2013 has seen Android account for 36% and iPhone drop to 29%.
iPhones remain the largest source of revenue for app developers as they bring in 40% revenue compared to Androids at 30%.
Apple’s iPad is winning the tablet game. It accounts for 10.6% of all traffic and 12% of revenue in the last quarter of 2013.
Of all advertisements over smartphones and tablets, iOS devices accounted for 43.3% and genertated 55.7% of all revenue on mobile devices. The Android figures were 37.7% of adverts and 31% revenue.
A spokesperson for Opera said, "While Android continues to make impressive gains in its share of traffic and monetization for phones and tablets, iOS retains the overall lead across all mobile platforms for both total traffic and monetization.”
"Looking ahead, we expect to see Android's share of revenue continue to grow, but given how far ahead Apple is in the tablet space, we do not expect Android to take the lead for cross-platform monetization in 2014."
