If you thought your current tablet was powerful, think again. Nvidia announced its new 192-core Tegra K1 chipset at CES 2014 but there was no way to tell how the processor would stand up against the competition.
The chip has now been benchmarked, however, and it blows all other tablets out of the water in terms of graphical power. According to the benchmarks the Tegra K1 was clocked at 60 fps in 1080p. The current Tegra 4 chip can only manage 16 fps, a dramatic different of 44 fps.
Current competition proccessors chalked up scores much lower than the Tegra K1. Apple’s iPad Air came in at 27 fps on 1080p, the same as the iPad Mini with Retina display. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 came in at slightly less with 24 fps. None of these would stand up to being able to play games but the Tegra K1 would be able to.
The Tegra K1 has the graphical capabilities of the Xbox 360 and PS3 but only requires 5% of their power. Nvidia CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang, said at CES in Las Vegas, "It's almost inappropriate to call it Tegra 5, because it's simply not linear. It's the most successful architecture we've created."
Could the Nvidia’s new chip pave the way for gaming tablets? We’ll be seeing the Tegra K1 chip begin to appear in devices from the middle of this year.
In fact we are already starting to hear rumours that the Microsoft Surface 3 will be the first to include the Tegra K1 processor. It is currently unknown when Microsoft will bring about the next version of the Surface but it’s likely to be before 2014 is over.
