Rumours that Amazon has been working on its first games console have been circulating for almost a year now. Amazon has now bought up the game studio which made Xbox One exclusive Killer Instinct, hinting toward a console announcement soon.
The studio confirmed to Pocket-lint, "Amazon has acquired Double Helix as part of our ongoing commitment to build innovative games for customers.” Amazon could have bought the studio in order to work on some Amazon console exclusive titles.
Rumours of a video game console by Amazon have suggested a 2014 release date with a similar design to the hardware of the PSone. Accoridng to some reports the console is grey and oblong and it will also support third-party apps, probably from companies such as Netflix and LoveFILM.
Amazon hasn’t confirmed what Double Helix is working on but it will stay at the same location in California. It is looking likely that Amazon is preparing to invade the living room in 2014. With games studios under its belt, the company could be working on some killer exclusive titles, which as Microsoft and Sony show, is exactlywhat you need in the competetive space.
Previous rumours have pointed toward an Ouya-like console with a forked Android operating system - similar to the way you find a custom Amazon Android build on Kindle Fire tablets. The company previously hired a number of games producers including the executive producer of Gears Of War 3.
The company has also posted a job listing on a new product it believes will be “even bigger than the Kindle.” That’s some high hopes there, and if it’s comparing the product to the reasonably priced Kindle range, we could be seeing some cheap Amazon consoles on the shelves very soon.
Exciting stuff. Would you pick up an Amazon Android console and what would seal the deal? Let us know in the comments.
