At the end of 2013, BlackBerry announced a new deal with Foxconn to make budget handsets which are affordable for the everyman. But what is BlackBerry creating for those who want a high-end, powerful BlackBerry device?
Rumours are now suggesting Blackberry is working on a device with the Snapdragon MSM8994 inside. N4BB have spoken to a number of BlackBerry sources which confirmed the company would be using the Snapdragon chip inside a new device.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8994 in an octa-core 64-bit chipset where each core can reach up to 2.5GHz.
Now for the technical bit, the MSM8994 also includes,
- 1600MHz 4GB RAM LPDDR3 PoP
- Adreno 430 500 MHz
- Pixel fill Rate 6Gpix / s
- Vertex 500Mtri / s
- OpenGL ES3.0, direct x11.1, OpenCL1.2
This device will hit shelves in 2014 according to the sources. It is currently unclear if the device is still in development after John Chen has taken over as CEO. He seems to be taking the company in a direction where it focuses on more affordable handsets for emerging markets.
The company already killed off two handsets in 2013 and cancelled the BlackBerry Live 2014 conference. The company has even axed its celebrity Global Creative Director, Alicia Keys. So this unnamed high-end handset could have been culled in the process. Only time will tell.
