HTC is reportedly getting ready to reveal a smartwatch product at the Mobile World Congress expo in Barcelona, taking place from February 24.
The report comes via Bloomberg, however, this isn’t a full-blown launch according to the source, cited as a “person with direct knowledge of the plans,” it seems HTC is only showing the product to a select few during private meetings. It’s alleged HTC will be meeting with carrier networks behind the scenes, but nothing is known about the purpose or tone of these meetings.
According to Pocket-lint, the HTC smartwatch, which doesn’t have a name yet, is based on Qualcomm’s widely publicised Toq smartwatch design. Because the design is similar, it’s expected the HTC device will use the Toq’s Mirasol display to provide a more energy-efficient screen – it’s a bit like E Ink, but in colour. Like the Toq, the HTC watch will also have Bluetooth connectivity and music playback capability.
Reports indicate this is just one of several wearables HTC has in the works, Bloomerg says there is another smartwatch with a focus on Google Now, though this one uses an AMOLED display. The company allegedly also has a smart bracelet in development, like other smart bracelets this will focus on health features and be similar to the Nike Fuelband.
HTC is still playing softly, softly because apparently it has no plans to push a smartwatch to market until at least Christmas 2014, so it may be quite a while before we see something. It’s in the early stages of development with testing still taking place for battery and screen performance.
