Qualcomm’s keenly anticipated Snapdragon 805 processor now has another reason to get mobile aficionados hot under the collar: 4K gaming on Android tablets.
According to a report from The Verge, Qualcomm showcased an Android-based reference tablet at MWC 2014 which boasts Ultra HD gaming graphics on a 3840x2160 pixel display. The publication went hands-on with the device to play a selection of titles, including Asphalt 8 and DC Comics Beat-Em-Up Injustice: Gods Among Us. Allegedly these games didn’t need any tweaking to get the full benefit of 4K.
“Of course, their textures and graphical detail are still designed for a lesser resolution, so they don't look as awesome as they could, but the sheer fact that they can be run at 4K with a perfectly playable frame rate is impressive,” said The Verge’s Vlad Savov, who also pointed out the higher resolution gives picture quality four times as dense as 1080p full HD with more than two-and-a-half times the pixel density of the iPad Air.
Qualcomm has the Snapdragon 805 geared up and ready for full production and expects we will see devices running the hardware this summer.
While the addition of 4K is certainly a benefit, we’d argue it isn’t exactly top priority for mobile gaming right now – it’s not really what it needs most. An improvement to gameplay, control input and the addition of streaming and pairing features with consoles and PCs would all be much more welcome.
