Sony has shared its financial results for the third quarter of last year. The company sold 700,000 more Xperia handsets than the same period in 2012 marking a rise to 10.7 million smartphones over the three month quarter.
Sony has been experiencing the same increases for a while now, constantly increasing slowly but surely. Even though it was an increase in smartphone sales, it still didn’t hit its own predicited figures.
After the news the company has gone back and edited its prediction from 42 million handsets over the year, to 40 million. The company already sold 30.3 million so Sony is expecting to sell less than 10 million handsets in Q1 2014.
Stronger exchange rates paired with an increase in the Average Selling Price of Xperia handsets increased revenue 44.8%. The Xperia division made $4.4 billion, but overall it saw a net loss of $120 million.
The future for Xperia is looking bright though, Sony is continuing to expand the handset family and continuing to release the handsets worldwide.
Sony is also experiencing improved revenue after the success of the PlayStation 4. The game consoles meant the Game division of Sony made $4.2 billion.
We're hearing more and more rumours of the Sony Xperia Z2 (Siruis) handset, here's the latest.
The Average Selling Price (ASP) of Xperia smartphones also went up, which along with favorable exchange rates resulted in 44.8% increase in sales for the division to $4.396 billion, but a net loss of $120 million, including $78 million impairment charges for the PC business.
