Living rooms all over the world, watch out! Apple TV is no longer a hobby and that’s according to Apple’s CEO Tim Cook. At an annual meeting on Friday he unveiled the news that Apple sold more than $1.1 billion worth of Apple TV set-top boxes during 2013.
He also promised there would be a next generation of Apple TV products coming in the future. Many analysts and executives have referred to the Apple TV business as the company's “hobby” - side project for Apple while it concentrates on the computer, tablet and phone markets.
Cook has now said, “It's a little more difficult to call it a hobby these days.”
Does this mean Apple is beginning to get serious with it’s Apple TV project?
It works as a set-top box for your TV which uses services such as Netflix to stream video content directly through the internet to your TV. As the way people watch TV changes, Apple is aiming to cash-in through the Apple TV box and it seems to have set the ball rolling during 2013.
But how could the company change the service with new products? It seems we are about to find out as Apple ups its game in the television market.
Previously Apple employed a cable TV executive to work on the Apple TV project. Jean-François Mulé was employed as a new engineering director for Apple as he has over 15 years experience in the cable TV industry.
Cook also said during the conference that Apple has acquired 23 companies in the last 16 months. Apple is still looking for other interesting technology companies to invest in but it’s not in a race to buy the most companies possible. That said, Cook followed up saying this "doesn't mean we won't buy a huge company tomorrow afternoon.”
