The lines between mobile and console gaming are beginning to blur. Mobile gaming has reached a level where graphically it is comparable to earlier consoles and game developers are finding interesting new mechanics to control gameplay.
Sony recently announced its PlayStation Now service which will bring video game streaming directly to Sony mobile phones and later models from other manufacturers. Microsoft is expected to announce a similar scheme in the near future too, console gaming is beginning to become mobile.
With that in mind, we've decided to pick out the quality titles which you can play on your handset right now.
In this run down we don’t want to include the generic Flappy Bird clones. We also want to avoid including games which encourage you to spend hundreds of pounds in micro-payments just to get anywher. If a game restricts you from continuing without paying, we won’t include it.
Games in this list may also set you back a little bit when you first start off rather than being free options, but that’s the price of quality.
Without further ado, let’s get stuck in to the best games available on your Android device.
Asphalt 8: Airborne
The latest in the Asphalt series is graphically stunning for a mobile game. Avaliable on your tablet or smartphone for free it sits you in the driving seat of over 47 high-performance cars from the world's best manufacturers such as Lamborghini, Bugatti, Ferrari and Pagani.
The whole aim of the game is in the title, get airborne. You’re more likely to win the race if you drive straight for that rickety looking ramp and it gives you the chance to do barrel rolls in mid-air for extra points - don't come here expecting the most realistic of driving experiences, but it is fun!
The game lets you to race in a number of locations including Venice, Iceland and the Nevada Desert.
Multiplayer options are included as well for that extra bit of competition. You’re going to need some serious room on your device though to cope with the download, Android devices will need up to 1.53GB of room to install it.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Rockstar’s controversial game series is now available on your smartphone. Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas are now available on Android devices but we chose Vice City as it’s our favourite edition right out of the PS2 era.
It’s the full-blown game released for the 10-year anniversary since we met Tommy Vercetti and it’s still as addictive as ever. You cruise around the 80’s version of Miami robbing banks, assassinating targets and drag racing around the city, with more than a handful of Scarface references thrown into the mix. It’s kind of mind blowing that a game the PS2 struggled to run is now available on your tiny mobile phone handset.
GTA III and Vice City cost £2.99 each whilst San Andreas, being the most recent title, costs £4.99, but it’s expected to drop down soon.
Dead Trigger 2
You like killing zombies right? Dead Trigger 2 is pretty well focused on just that. It’s another title which is visually stunning on your smartphone and brings to mind even the recent Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles in terms of graphics.
There are currently three different gameplay regions including 15 different kinds of environment. On top of that there are 30 different weapons to use on the shuffling undead.
There are always new updates coming out too, which means the zombie action is unlikely to ever end.
And the best part? It’s all free. There’s not even the ability to spend more money in game so it’s entirely available right from the off without spending a penny.
Real Racing 3
Coming from game developer Electronic Arts, Real Racing 3 allows you some more realistic racing experiences than other motoring-based games available. The tracks included are officially licensed and there’s over 70 officially licensed cars from manufacturers such as Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, Mercedes-Benz, Bugatti, and Audi.
There are 12 tracks to race on, meaning there’s plenty of replay value where you experiment with different cars in different environments. Online features allow you to race ghosts of other players and you can upload your scores directly to a social networking platform or race in real-time.
It’s free as well but there’s the option of upgrading some cars in trade for real-world money - the main point though is that it doesn't hamstring you with microtransaction barriers. You’ll also need to spend 1.5GB of that precious storage space to hold the game, however.
Heads Up!
Heads Up! is potentially the best party game available on the market right now. You remember the game 20 Questions where you used to place a post-it note on your forehead? It’s like that but on your mobile phone and a lot faster-paced.
Choose your round from topics such as Blockbuster Movies, Accents and Impressions or Animals Gone Wild. Pull the smartphone to your forehead and different words appear where your friends have to describe it without mentioning exactly what is on the card. For example if you’re doing movies and “The Shining” comes up you could shout “Here’s Johnny!” for them to guess.
If you get it right swing the smartphone forward to move on or if you pass swing it back to move on. It’s pretty simple but ends up being good fun at a party, or just with a partner.
There are other rounds such as Act It Out which is like Charades or Hey Mr DJ where you can only hum the song much like that round on Never Mind The Buzzcocks.
It costs £0.62 to start with and from there you can buy a couple of extra decks for £0.62 each but there’s loads of topics to play through without spending anything more than the initial price.
