Plastic Not Doing It For You? Huawei Understands

Huawei is apparently making a bid to improve its mobile products going forward, as the company has revealed its plans to utilise more premium materials.

Shao Yang, Huawei’s chief marketing officer, spoke to Trusted Reviews and explained that the company is testing handset designs using glass, ceramic and metal. Yang said that a big part of customer satisfaction with smartphones comes down to the materials used.

"We are trying out new materials like glass and ceramic so we will become less and less focused on plastic," Yang said.

It’s true that there are always going to be users who argue the software, hardware and overall cohesion of the user experience is more important than aesthetics, feel and build quality, but this isn’t necessarily the average consumer – the source of massive sales. Look at the iPhone’s much-loved metal build. Look at the positive reception of the Sony Xperia Z2 and the HTC One.

Yang went on to say that more metal-built phones from the manufacturer are a certainty, “We will have more and more metal phones definitely.”

“We think people are very welcoming to metal phones and they think glass is also a good material but plastic is not so good," he added, "Consumers are very willing to have something new. Everything new, if it is a good quality, will get very good feedback.”

The news comes at an interesting point. Samsung is still one of the biggest phone makers on the planet, but it’s believed it may have blundered when rumours of a premium built Galaxy S5 using new materials failed to...materialise. Huawei is clearly seeking to capitalise the situation by offering an alternative to disappointed Samsung fans.
