Today we’ve seen the latest profits from the team behind Angry Birds and it’s not good news. Developer Rovio has released the figures which show profits nearly halved during 2013.
Rovio flew into the big time after Angry Birds took off. Multiple sequels alongside merchandising has meant the company was making near on $76.8 (£45.6) million in 2012. During the last fiscal year the company experienced a drop in profits down to $37 (£22) million.
The company’s revenue has grown from $210.6 (£125) million in 2012 to $215.9 (£128) million in the latest results. It’s thought the drop in profit was down to taking on a big influx of staff. Previously the company had 500 employees which grew to 800 in the last year.
Rovio has reorganised its staff recently as well with Jami Laes being promoted to executive vice-president for games. The previous executive vice-president Petro Jarvilehto left the company to make his own start-up studio called Seriously.
According to an interview earlier in 2014, Laes revealed less than half of the company’s 800 employees are actually working on developing games. Laes said the majority of the studio is working on building the Angry Birds brand even further.
For example, the company is planning to make three new original animated series with the Angry Birds brand.
