Google's made a name for the Nexus brand by pricing it competetively, but it looks like things may become even cheaper as rumours indicate a budget Nexus smartphone is in the works. A report from Chinese site MTKSJ suggests Taiwanese chip manufacturer MediaTek is working with Google on the affordable device.
The Chinese site has some past history with MediaTek resulting in a good track record of accurate reporting on such matters. Sources have reportedly said Google is teaming up with the chip firm to create a low priced smartphone.
Allegedly this new model is going to cost as little as $100 (£59.50) according to the “trusted insiders from Taiwan supply chains.”
So what will the handset’s specs look like? Don’t expect it to be a high-end piece of kit like other Nexus models. The site says “overall specifications should not be too high.”
We don’t think this handset will be the next in the flagship line and expect the Nexus 6 to be an entirely different handset. If so, the new budget Nexus smartphone may not even make its way to the UK or the US as it may be intended for developing markets. With that said, budget phones do still have a tendency to do well in developed markets, so it could go either way.
The price is only a prediction rather than anything solid at this stage, there’s no confirmation from any of the sources that it’ll be that specific price. It’ll be interesting to get our hands on some real specifications as well so we can judge whether it’ll be worth the money.
We will keep our eyes peeled for more details on a budget Nexus smartphone. Even if it doesn’t come to Western markets we will be sure to let you know when we hear more.
