Our game of the week this week is Monster Legacy, a title just launched on the Apple App Store where you collect monsters and battle them as you go. I know what you're thinking and you're right, it does sound suspiciously like the P word which ends in "mon", but Monster Legacy has more to offer than your run-of-the-mill imitator.

I’ve been playing Monster Legacy for over a week now and am beginning to feel fully immersed into the world of battling monsters. Still after a week into the game there’s one key hook to keep me coming back, the art style.

Monster Legacy’s art style is entirely unique to the game. It looks great without being too cute and cuddly but somehow ensures things fresh and airy enough to keep you coming back for more.

Then there’s the battle element. It’s turned based combat where you decide your next move. Each monster has a variety of powers which you can use which get more powerful the higher your level. Combat at first can seem a little one sided, you’re never really going to lose, but then it gently builds up and becomes more difficult in every battle.

Monsters themselves are varied but take forever to level up. If you want to get anywhere through the quests with Monster Legacy you’ll need to work on battling with rival monsters and increasing each of your monsters' levels. Building a formidable team will take hours of your life.

It’s not just battling though, well...it’s mostly battling...but there are lots of quests to take part in as well. For the most part you’re helping out worried villagers but this gives you a lot of freedom to explore the world. Soon enough, the story develops into you defeating a bunch of other monster trainers and eventually the Evil Lord Ardur. If the name didn’t suggest it enough: he’s not a nice guy.

Along the way you'll be able to develop your own ranch, where you can train and raise your monsters, it's quite an in-depth game feature to keep you interested.

Of course, like all these games on mobile devices, there are in-app purchases. You didn’t think you’d get all this gameplay for free did you? Well don't worry too much as the micropayments are quite sparsely scattered and entirely unnecessary in order to progress. You can get through the entire game without having to spend a penny, it’s just if you want customization or to get better faster you may need to part with some real life cash.

You’ll know after sitting down with Monster Legacy for an hour whether it’ll be right for you. There’s no harm in downloading it and seeing where it takes you. Then again, maybe there is, it could take over your entire social life. Don’t blame us if it does, blame Lord Ardur.

Want to download Monster Legacy? You'll find it on the Apple App Store here.
