It looks like Apple is about to take a leaf out of Microsoft’s book and take the idea of split-window multitasking on its slates. Rumour is Apple will introduce the feature into it’s iOS 8 operating system which is thought to be due for an announcement later this year.
Sources told 9to5mac the new update lets users run two iPad apps consecutively side-by-side. It’s not yet sure if you’ll be able to move the windows so you can have it at, say, a 25%-75% split, or if it will only work half and half.
Microsoft’s Surface tablet introduced the ability to “snap” windows together so you can multitask. Some Samsung Galaxy devices on Android also have the Multiscreen feature which works in a similar fashion.
The sources also revealed both apps will run next to each other and will allow interaction. This way you’ll be able to drag text and images from different applications into the application on the other side.
We know it is definitely coming to the 9.7-inch version of the iPad but it could also be coming to the iPad Mini, it’s currently uncertain. What we do know is it won’t work in portrait mode, the tablet must stay in landscape mode.
The news of Apple taking Microsoft’s multi-tasking feature comes after Microsoft released an advert criticising the company for not coming up with an alternative. You can watch the full advert below for Microsoft’s Surface 2 vs. iPad Air.
We know iOS 8 will bring about Apple’s Healthbook applications, a redesign for Apple Maps and some brand new features for the TouchID technology. For a full rundown of what we know so far head over here.
