Budget tablets are all the rage right now and Tesco’s Hudl tablet sold some big figures ahead of Christmas 2013. It comes as little surprise then, to hear there will be a Tesco Hudl 2 tablet before the end of the year. But on top of that there are also details emerging for the supermarket's first ever smartphone.
The BBC revealed that the company will release a smartphone running Google’s Android software. It also believes the specs will be comparable to the Samsung Galaxy S5 making it a high-end smartphone, unlike the original Hudl tablet.
After the initial announcement, Chief Executive Philip Clarke told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Wake Up to Money programme there will be a bunch of Tesco pre-installed services on the tablet.
He also later commented saying there would be a refreshed Hudl launching in September this year. The original has already sold over half a million units.
It seems the smartphone will sit in the higher-end of the market than the budget tablet did, but will also be aggressively priced. This could mean something a little like the OnePlus One with really high specifications for a price around the £300 mark.
The original Tesco Hudl launched at £119 and we expect to see the second version look like something similar with a few extra improvements for the same kind of price.
You can read our review of the original Tesco Hudl here, we quite liked it, especially for the low cost. Have you got the original Tesco Hudl? Would you be interested in the new version or the new phone? Let us know in the comments below.
There’s no word on what specifications the smartphone will have just yet. We'll report more as we hear it.
