Windows Phone 9 Preview Coming Mid 2015

News James Peckham 15:03, 22 May 2014

Leaked documents suggest the first previews for Windows Phone 9 will begin in Q2 next year

Windows Phone 8.1 is barely even out of the gates yet but we’re already hearing details about the next iteration. Windows Phone 9 is looking likely to be on the way during 2015 and leaked documents have suggested a preview will land in Q2.

The documents show the Windows Phone 9 Preview will land in either Q2 or Q3 of 2015 so anytime between April and the end of September next year. There’s no details on the final release of the software or when Windows 9 will launch either but we expect the desktop version to have a preview at the same time as the mobile version.

Time wise the information pans out. It took Microsoft 17 months to release Windows Phone 8.1 after the release of Windows Phone 8. If the information in the leaked documents turns out to be correct it’ll take 16 months for Microsoft to release Windows Phone 9.

More importantly though, we’re interested in what features Windows Phone 9 will bring. Windows Phone 8.1 brought about big changes for the operating system including Cortana, a notification centre and a load more control over the platform.

It’ll be interesting to see how many changes there will be in the switch to WP9. In the meantime why not check out our review of Windows Phone 8.1.
