Apple Merges iOS Features With OSX “Yosemite”: Calls, Email, iCloud Drive

Apple has introduced some interesting new mobile compatibility features to OSX Yosemite

Apple just announced the latest version of OSX, dubbed Yosemite, and the new build features several cross-over continuity features with iOS.

A merging of the two platforms in one form or another has been anticipated for some time, but no-one predicted quite how Apple would do it. The result showcased today keeps both platforms separate but allows some key features to interact.

Apple introduced an enhanced version of its iCloud service, called iCloud Drive, which allows users to customise and organise their stored data however they wish – it’s essentially an official alternative to DropBox. Another key feature is “Handoff”, which allows your iPad to sync to your Mac – the iPad will recognise when you’ve been working on the Mac and presents a new lockscreen icon, swiping this will allow you to continue your work on the tablet. You can swipe work between devices in real time.

Instant Hotspot is another feature which helps with keeping things synced between your iOS device and Mac. If you are, for example, writing an email on your iPhone, it will recognise this activity and prompt you to use the Mac. The phone can act as a relay for iMessages and they will appear on your Mac screen, and it also supports voice calls via the Mac – you can answer your phone on the computer, or conduct a call through the web browser.

“We're able to do the same thing with phone calls. You can accept the call on your Mac and use it as a speakerphone. And this works even if your phone is across the house,” said Apple’s Craig Federighi.

"It's also a great way to dial the phone. Even on a webpage. You can call it right from your Mac."
