Apple buying up Beats wasn’t really to do with the headphones business, even though that did bring in a tidy profit last year, it was more to do with the acquisition of Beats Music. Beats Music is a pay monthly streaming site similar to Spotify.
Apple has so far been without an unlimited streaming service and has opted to purchase a fully-fledged, up-and-running service instead of starting from scratch. iTunes is till doing particularly well but music sales are dropping as app purchases rise.
