Motorola's forthcoming smartwatch will support Qi wireless charging, an FCC filing indicates

Motorola’s Moto 360 will feature wireless charging, if reports prove correct.

According to an FCC filing for a Motorola Wireless Charger the accessory has a round shape just like the watch, but goes on to explicitly state it is “intended for use with the Moto 360 wrist-worn device.”

Specifically the filing details that the charger is a Qi charger using the WPC protocol, which is the kind of charging we’ve seen before on the Nexus 5 and Nokia Lumia devices, where the device simply sits on top of a charging pad to power up. It’s not yet clear whether existing Qi chargers, such as those designed for the aforementioned devices, will also work with the Moto 360.

The Moto 360 is thought to be gearing up for a summer launch, though precisely when it will arrive is unknown, it’s expected that Google I/O, which kicks off this week, will see a lot more details revealed regarding Android Wear, Google’s Android build designed for wearable devices. At the same time, that should mean we’ll see more devices showcased running the software, and that could include the Moto 360. We’ve already seen Google developers experimenting with both the Moto 360 and LG G Watch, while the 360 has remained prominent in Google’s teaser material. Could the Moto 360 launch during or just after Google I/O? That might be a bit much to hope for, but the fact that accessories are passing through the FCC right now suggests there isn’t too long to wait.
