There’s been a lot of talk recently about the Nexus line being on the way out with plenty of mention of Google’s rumoured Project Silver which could be used to replace it. And yet the Nexus 6 rumours still persist like today's news that the Big G is planning on doing a Nexus 6 handset after all.
According to the latest gossip, which comes courtesy of Ausdroid’s unnamed “source within Google who is close to the project”, the Nexus 6 is well into development and it features a 5.5in display similar to what’s aboard the LG G3.
The news comes following statements made by LG’s Communications Director, Ken Hong, who rather pointedly said LG had not been contacted by Google to produce a new Nexus device. Of course, companies including LG have made such statements before ahead of a launch only to reveal it was a bluff later on.
If the Nexus 6 does indeed have a LG G3-like display it will be very impressive indeed. The LG G3’s screen is easily one of the best on the market in terms of clarity with a stunning 534 pixels-per-inch pixel density.
Despite all this, it’s still not clear whether Google will launch the Nexus 6 at Google I/O, which kicks off this week. Traditionally the conference has seen a focus on software, but has occasionally been a launch platform for Google hardware products carrying new builds of Android.
Google is expected to reveal more about Android Wear and a new version of Android for phones and tablets, possibly Android 5 Lollipop. It’s also more heavily rumoured that a new Nexus tablet could be making an appearance during or after the conference, a Nexus 8 or Nexus 9, which may have been made by HTC.
With recent device launches Google has simply quietly rolled its handsets and slates out onto Google Play with little fanfare, could we see a similar strategy after Google I/O 2014?
