Based on Samsung’s earlier comments it’s a certainty we will see the Galaxy Note 4 unveiled once again at the annual IFA conference in Berlin, Germany, this September. However, it may show up with a slightly different set of camera hardware to what we expected previously.
According to reports, the Galaxy Note 4 could ship with a 12-megapixel camera sensor, together with optical image stabilisation (OIS). The word comes via South Korean news publication ETNews.
This information contradicts Samsung’s usual MO and earlier reports. Samsung has historically fitted its Galaxy Note devices with the same camera hardware from its then-contemporary Galaxy S flagship, meaning many suspected we’d see the same 16MP ISOCELL sensor from the Galaxy S5 inside the Galaxy Note 4. This was supported by a benchmark which appeared in AnTuTu’s benchmarking data for what’s believed to be the Note 4. An earlier rumour suggested a 20MP ISOCELL was also on the cards.
There is an argument for a 12MP sensor, however. Rumours also suggested the Note 4 might be one of the thinnest phones to hit the market this year, while others implied it would see a curved variant. Such changes to the bodywork could create problems for larger sensors, hence the 12MP option, although the OIS throws a spanner in the works. OIS modules are more compact than they used to be, and we don’t know what trickery Samsung might have pulled now that it’s dabbling in producing its own camera hardware, but generally speaking OIS modules do add bulk. It’s all rather chin-strokingly curious.
The report goes on to indicate a 3.7MP front-facing secondary camera. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 is expected to be announced at the IFA conference in the first week of September with a global rollout from September 25 shortly after the event. It’s believed it will feature the same 5.7-inch display size as its predecessor but with a QHD resolution.
