EE Cash On Tap Contactless Payment Will Work On London Underground

EE introduces Cash On Tap for contactless mobile payments - and it works with the London transport network!

EE has announced that its contactless payment service for mobile devices will be fully compatible with the introduction of TFL’s (Transport For London) contactless payment scheme, set to be appearing on the London Underground, Overground, and DLR on September 16.

It works by using EE’s Cash on Tap application, which has been setup to ensure it never costs more than an Oyster card due to daily and weekly “caps”. The company teases that there will be “no more queuing to top-up” as you’re able to add a bank card to the application and top-up directly on your phone. The application has been developed in co-operation with MasterCard and is chock full of security features much like any other banking app.

Cash on Tap is said to be compatible with “over 500,000 customers’ handsets this year” and it doesn’t incur a fee to use. While EE doesn’t state as much explicitly, it’s clearly NFC based as handsets must be “compatible”, but the list of said devices is quite long as NFC is increasingly common these days. You can download the application on Google Play – it’s only available on Android devices for now.

As well as TFL, Cash on Tap will work at a range of high street stores and outlets, including Cafe Nero, Pret A Manger, M&S and McDonald’s, amongst others.

Gerry McQuade, Chief Marketing Officer, EE said, “Users of the world’s greatest tube network will shortly benefit from the latest in mobile payment technology, allowing them to use their phone to pay for their daily commute.

“As more and more people benefit from the simplicity, convenience and security that mobile contactless payments offer, it’s rapidly becoming clear that the days of the physical wallet are fast becoming numbered.”

EE’s also put together this handy video to explain how to get Cash on Tap up and running. For more info, check out EE's dedicated page here.
