Google Play Gets A Semi Android L “Material Design” Makeover

Google's new look Android UI hits Google Play already

The Google Play store is now getting an update which overhauls the visual design, adding a touch of that “Material Design” language we saw previewed for Google’s next build of Android, Android L, showcased at Google I/O 2014 in June.

You might not notice at first though, because the main page is still the same as before. The parts that have been tweaked are the category pages for books, films, apps and so on, as well as pages for individual apps and other content. While it’s not full “Material”, which will debut on the next major Android update, it’s a taste of things to come. Pictures take pride of place in the new design, animations are nice and smooth with lots of clean sliding motions, and there are consistent and coded themes of solid colours featured throughout. Overall it’s extremely clean, tidy, and streamlined, something Google made pretty apparent it was going for at Google I/O.

Droid Life has put together a video tour showing the differences between the old build and the brand new Material version.

If you’re running an Android device you should be seeing a prompt to update Google Play very soon, the version number is 4.9.13. However, if for some reason you really can't wait, you can sideload the .apk by downloading it here.
