Headwear is the next big thing according to a couple of the major companies. Sony has its Project Morpheus headset, which will work with the PS4, Facebook now has Oculus Rift and Google has its Glass technology.
Microsoft now wants to jump in and get involved to. It has now filed a patent for augmented reality glasses that will be able to recognise items and inform the wearer a bunch of different statistics.
The patents look to reflect the style of Google Glass unlike Oculus or Morpheus. It looks like a merging of the real world and the virtual world; the example given in the patent shows how the glasses interact with real life objects. It will be able to work out cars, tell the user the speed it is going and give the user a warning if they are in any danger. Now there’s no need to think whilst crossing the road.
It also shows an example of playing a game at home, you’ll play on the headset and it’ll pick up objects around the room to make sure you’re not going to run into your coffee table or smash a vase off the side.
We’ve heard rumours of Microsoft working on connected eyewear but it was quite a while ago. We first heard details way back in November 2012 and then again during 2013. These patents pretty much confirm Microsoft wants to get involved and the company knows exactly what area of the market it wants to take hold of.
