Pictures and specs have emerged of a device alleged to be a successor model to the hugely successful Moto G, Motorola’s popular budget handset.
The Moto G is thought to be Motorola’s best-selling smartphone ever, so it’s not surprising that a new version is in the works. The picture has popped up courtesy of mallandonoandroid.com, which also gives us some specs and a codename for the device: XT 1068.
The site refers to it as a the “Moto G Second Generation”, but it’s unclear what it will be called on launch. It’s said to have a quad-core processor based on ARM V7 architecture, with an Adreno 305 GPU – suggesting it’s the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 aboard the original model. The camera is an improved 8-megapixel setup from the Moto G’s 5-megapixel snapper.
A display size isn’t specified, but the resolution is pegged at the same 720p HD as the first-gen Moto G. It’s also thought there will be dual-SIM variants.
Aside from the camera boost, there doesn’t appear to be much difference from the first Moto G, although as the pictures show the exterior design has changed with Moto E style front-facing speaker grilles. We can’t tell for certain, but the bezel looks very thin and the plastic appears to be high-quality with a matte finish, possibly soft-touch similar to Google’s Nexus 5.
Then of course there's the question of whether or not it will have Android L? Part of the appeal with the Moto G was its use of the most up-to-date Android build in a stock configuration.
The Moto G of course was launched when Motorola was still owned by Google, but now that Lenovo owns the company it may want to capitalise on the Moto G’s popularity via a successor model without pouring too much money into it, and it may also not want to mess with the formula too much.
Hopefully we’ll see more leaks and spec details soon.
