Samsung Working On Smartwatches With Round Faces

Samsung has filed some patents for smartwatches with round faces

Samsung was one of the first major manufacturers to jump into the world of smartwatches. We’ve now had multiple versions of the Gear smartwatch but all so far have featured square designs.

Centuries of watch making and design refinement has brought about the round watch face that many traditional watches use. The round watch face on a smart watch was pretty much unheard of until Motorola announced the Moto 360. The reception has been pretty enthusiastic, to put it mildly, with many consumers posting their love for the design online already.

You may think Samsung filing patents for a round smartwatch was spurred on by Motorola’s offering, but you’d be wrong. The patents in question, which show off three different timepieces, were filed on March 15 2013. At least a whole year before Motorola unveiled its watch alongside the Android Wear announcement.

Samsung’s patents, which have just been unearthed, show off three watches each, with one including a camera that reads gestures from the wearer. Each one also has a charging port on the clasp.

Not many other features have been shown off in the patents but the design certainly looks a lot more interesting than the Samsung Gear smartwatches. It’s likely these devices would be powered by Android Wear if they ever see the light of day, Samsung has opted for the operating system on its latest wearable: the Samsung Gear Live.
