Skype for Android is receiving a new update with a few new features. The Skype 5.0 for Android update brings with it a way to find your friends automatically.
If someone in your address book is also connected to Skype you’ll be able to talk to them directly, all the chatting, calling and sharing features are available instantly.
The update is coming from today and it’ll ask for you to verify your mobile number at some point in the next couple of months. Once you’ve done that it’ll look for contact matches automatically between Skype accounts and your address book. Once it finds a match they'll appear in your Skype people list.
If more of your friends join Skype from there they’ll automatically update as well. Skype also promises not to spam your friends with notifications once they’re in your address book.
Your mobile phone number will not become public on your Skype profile and if you want to turn the feature off it’s easy to do under the Settings menu in the Skype app. There’s also a way of deactivating your mobile phone number from your account as well if you want to keep them entirely separate.
Although the feature is currently only available on Android handsets, Skype is attempting to roll the update out to other mobile platforms in the coming months.
