BlackBerry Passport Extensively Detailed In Hands-On Review

Some enviable souls have grabbed a BlackBerry Passport ahead of launch and spent a bit of time with it

BlackBerry hasn’t exactly been keeping quiet about its next handset, the oddly shaped BlackBerry Passport, but even so, the company hasn’t divulged absolutely everything there is to know about the phone either. Which is probably why someone else has got hold of one and taken it upon themselves to dish all the dirt.

The folks at Mobilenet.cz managed to get their mitts on a BlackBerry Passport and have revealed all the specs and features in a detailed breakdown. The processor is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 quad-core Krait 400 chip clocked at 2.2GHz, with an Adreno 330 GPU and 3GB of RAM.

We don’t yet know whether there will be different storage variants, but the model Mobilenet got to grips with had 32GB of onboard space plus microSD support, while the battery is reported to be a 3,450mAh cell – however, there was apparently not enough time to do proper battery testing.

We already knew, of course, that the Passport presents somewhat unconventional proportions and is a fairly large handset. The report says it measures 128x90.3x9.3mm and it has a fair bit of heft to it at 195g.

On the imaging side of things the primary camera is a 13MP setup with LED flash, optical image stabilisation (OIS), and 1080p video. Connectivity includes 4G LTE, NFC and Wi-Fi.

The unusual display is a 4.5in setup with a 1440x1440 pixel resolution at 453 pixels-per-inch (ppi) and utilises Gorilla Glass 3.

Mobilenet’s hands-on review suggests the handset has a solid build quality with a steel surround and a soft touch back panel. The site reports the device doesn’t lend itself well to one-handed use but notes that the unique keyboard and touchpad combination works quite well.

The source mentions the Passport will arrive in Europe during October, which does sit well with previous reports we’ve seen of a September announcement. It will reportedly cost 16,00CZK, which is about $760 or £458.
