Woah, hold up. Stop everything. If you were anticipating the extensively rumoured iPhone 6 thought to be launching on September 9, you may be slightly peeved to learn that the rumours for its successor, the iPhone 6S, have already begun to emerge.
That’s right, the next iPhone isn’t even out yet and we’re already seeing word of the following model. The word comes via Chinese news publication Economic Daily News (and DigiTimes), which reports that TSMC will begin “volume production” of the next Apple processor, the A9 chip, during Q1 of 2015.
That new chip will follow on from the iPhone 6’s A8 chip and is a 16 nanometre (nm) processor, for reference, the current A7 chip is 28nm and a lower figure means a faster and more efficient chip. The new model is being referred to by Chinese sources as the iPhone 6S, although this appears to be an assumed title rather than anything official. It does of course follow Apple’s established naming convention of a numbered model followed by an “S” variant. TSMC is also reportedly producing the A8 for the iPhone 6.
While nothing specific has been said, it’s implied the A9 will also be found inside a successor model to Apple’s new 5.5in iPhone variant thought to be launching alongside the iPhone 6 and using the same A8 chip – though we still don’t know exactly what this model will be called, so there’s no knowing what the successor will be known as either.
Naturally we shouldn't expect to see anything of the iPhone 6S until at least the summer of 2015, possibly later. We'll keep you posted as more rumours emerge later on.
