Tip-offs out of the Asian supply network suggest Apple is prepping its iPad Air successor, thought to be called the iPad Air 2. Allegedly component suppliers have increased production of parts specifically for the new iPad.
The word comes via DigiTimes, citing anonymous sources who suggest the tablet will once again feature a 9.7in screen with touch panels manufactured by TPK and GIS. The resolution will reportedly remain the same as the iPad Air (2048 x 1536 pixels), but the iPad Air 2 will apparently be thinner than its predecessor and feature an updated Apple A8 processor. The fingerprint scanning functionality provided by TouchID will also be enhanced, although details are sparse on this subject, we can speculate that in-line with rumours for the iPhone 6 this may refer to remote mobile payment services.
Although production appears to be kicking into a higher gear, it’s not expected we’ll see the iPad Air 2 soon. Apple’s September 9 event is thought to see the arrival of the 4.7in iPhone 6, possibly joined by a larger 5.5in iPhone “Air”, with both phones hitting retail within a few weeks. It’s also thought Apple will unveil the iWatch at the event, but it’s believed the wearable won’t be released until 2015. Traditionally, Apple has unveiled its iPhone devices in the Autumn and iPads have followed later, just ahead of the Christmas rush. At the moment there seems to be little reason to suspect this will change, the only wildcard is the continued rumour of Apple’s larger iPad Pro.
