BlackBerry is currently preparing for its first smartphone launch of 2014. It’ll mark the first time the company has officially unveiled a flagship handset under the leadership of CEO John Chen. It is expected the BlackBerry Passport will be fully detailed at an event on Wednesday held in Toronto, Dubai and London.
Ahead of the event, Chen has been visiting Singapore and revealed the pricing of the new handset in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
It’ll cost $599 in the US, there are currently no pricing details for the UK but it roughly converts to about £366. The last flagship handset from the company, the BlackBerry Z30, came in at $700, much closer to pricing for flagships from other manufacturers.
A 16GB SIM-free iPhone 6 will set you back $649 with prices increasing quickly for larger storage versions.
Chen revealed to The Wall Street Journal the handset should be priced at around $700 but “I figure that to try to get the market interested, we’re going to start a little lower than that.”
He also revealed in the interview that the battery will run for an average of 36 hours per a charge. Chen also spoke of the phone's display and said it “allows users to view 60 characters on each line, which is substantially more than typical, rectangular smartphones such as iPhones. You really are seeing a more entire picture than seeing a sliver.”
Various details about the BlackBerry Passport handset have been revealed over the past few months. It has piqued interest of quite a few, including us here at KYM, for having an innovative new design. The Passport is essentially a square handset with a 4.5in display and a full physical QWERTY keyboard along the bottom.
