Netflix Making Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Sequel!

Netflix is working on a sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and it’ll be available on the service and in cinemas

Netflix is taking screen entertainment by storm. Awards ceremonies are being eaten up by the original content the streaming service is creating. The network has created several acclaimed original television shows, including House Of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, and Bojack Horseman.

The streaming service also revived much-loved sitcom Arrested Development for a new full season as well as streaming the original three around the world.

Netflix is now moving into cinema and has announced its first film. Netflix is working on a sequel to the 2000 film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon after making a deal with the Weinstein Company.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend will premiere on August 28 2015 in the US on Netflix services as well as in IMAX movie theatres. The theatrical distribution of the film will be exclusive to IMAX screens and it’s not clear how many will be available.

Netflix is hoping for a good result with the IMAX release in China as the service is currently unavailable in the country.

"The movie going experience is evolving quickly and profoundly, and Netflix is unquestionably at the forefront of that movement," said film producer Harvey Weinstein.

The original film, directed by Ang Lee, became the highest-grossing foreign-language film in American history. It won four Academy Awards and was nominated for another six including Best Picture.

Ang Lee is not returning to direct the sequel, this time it’ll be Yuen Wo-Ping, and filming has already begun in New Zealand. The storyline will follow the sequel to the original book written by Wang Du Lu.

The traditional model of a film being released in the cinema and six months later arriving on home entertainment media is about to change as Netflix aims to take on the big guns in Hollywood. This could get interesting.
