BBM Top in World’s 4th Largest Messaging Market

BBM is used by 79% of people using messaging in Indonesia, with people spending an average of 23.3 minutes a day on it.

BBM continues to hold its own in Indonesia, where the population of 240 million relishes their mobile messaging and prefer to do it on BBM. 79% of Indonesia’s mobile users use BBM, beating out Facebook-owned WhatsApp and LINE, which take the 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively, according to research from Nielsen reported in the Jakarta Post , Reuters , and elsewhere. (We first discussed it on INSIDE BlackBerry back in June).

Why is BBM so popular?

Maybe it’s the versatility of the platform, with fun and useful innovations ranging from voice and video calls to channels and stickers. Plus, it’s cross-platform, so anyone can use it with anyone else.

One of the more recent developments is in the area of mobile commerce, via the social channels, and BBM Money (exclusive to Indonesia), which is gaining steam, as recently noted in this article.

As described on BlackBerry World:

BBM Money, issued by Permata Bank, allows BlackBerry users from any Indonesian bank account to get a new mobile money account which, after loading at any ATM, can send money to their BBM Contacts, top up at full value mobile prepaid numbers or PLN prepaid, send money to companies for bill pay and cash out at PermataBank ATMs or to any bank account.

Looking at all of these features rolled into a single messaging app, it makes perfect sense for Indonesians to be crazy for BBM – it’s simply the best platform for all they want to do.

It’s also not limited to Indonesia, either – get yours today for BlackBerry, iOS or Android devices, and see for yourself what all the fuss is about.
