Staring into the Wide-Eyed World of @marikim1004
For more from Mari’s eyedoll series, follow @marikim1004 on Instagram.
“I think eyes are the windows to the heart,” says Korean artist Mari Kim (@marikim1004). She first started drawing the character “Eyedoll” over 10 years ago, and has been exploring variations of this figure, known for its big eyes and brightly colored face, ever since.
“I started drawing as soon as I had pencil in my hand,” says Mari, who spent her childhood in Seoul and later studied animation in Australia. “I read comic books regularly, and I’ve always been interested in female cartoon figures.”
Mari’s portraits often pay tribute to popular fairy tales and superhero stories, and sometimes feature women with covered mouths or darkened, kaleidoscopic eyes.
“I’m trying to confront the fixed ideas of femininity projected by mainstream media and contemporary culture,” she says. “The eye is the wormhole connecting inner life with the outside world.”
