Oh dear. It’s not a very good time for new operating system builds it seems. Following on from Apple’s multitude of problems with its update to iOS 8 (and 8.1...and 8.1.1) reports are now coming in that the latest version of Android, 5.0 Lollipop, is also causing a few headaches.
According to a report from the BBC, users posting on Google’s official forums have said the update on their Nexus 7 tablets is causing performance issues, with devices running slower than before, struggling even with screen transitions and repeatedly crashing. Some users went as far as describing their devices as “unusable” with the new software. Another notable problem is that the system automatically removes apps built using Adobe Air and will not allow them to be reinstalled.
It’s an interesting turn of events because media coverage of Lollipop has so far been overwhelmingly positive. Problems with Apple’s software were immediately apparent as users encountering issues took to the web immediately. Google’s rollout has admittedly been a little slower and these issues are only just beginning to surface.
The older 2012 Nexus 7 is apparently encountering more problems than its more recent counterpart, with several apps outright refusing to operate while others repeatedly crash. Web browsers, including Google’s own Chrome app and Mozilla’s Firefox are also struggling on the software, according to some user reports.
It’s often the case that waiting for a time after a software rollout is a good policy to follow so that subsequent patches can be created to fix any major problems. However, with previous Android launches, particularly to Google’s own Nexus products, things have mostly gone without much of a hitch – for users to have so many problems with Nexus devices is rather surprising.
Google is yet to comment on the matter. We’ll be sure to update you with more details as they emerge.
