iOS 8.1.1 Update Rolls Out: Fixes iPhone 4S and iPad 2 Performance Woes

Apple is pushing out iOS 8.1.1 to fix performance issues on older devices

Apple is now rolling out its latest iOS 8.1.1 update to devices over-the-air. The update includes a range of tweaks, optimisations and bugfixes, and Apple describes it as providing “increased stability and performance improvements”, but crucially it aims to fix some very specific problems with iOS 8 builds encountered on the iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

Namely, iPhone 4S and iPad 2 owners have encountered severe performance slowdown when updating to iOS 8.1, it’s not a small number of incidents either and Apple has officially acknowledgd the problem, so this new build aims to address it.

Previously online Apple communities had self-medicated the issue by simply advising against upgrading to iOS or builds of iOS 8 altogether to maintain performance, or to rollback if possible to iOS 7 builds. Now though it seems the issues have been ironed out, so you can upgrade to iOS 8.1.1 if you wish. Of course, it remains to be seen whether there are still other problems introduced by the new build – certainly Apple hasn’t been having much luck so far and the iOS 8 rollout has been one of the buggiest in the firm’s history.
