Letting Creativity Roam for Dinovember
For more photos of the nighttime antics of the dinosaurs, follow @dinovember and @refetuma on Instagram, and browse the #dinovember hashtag.
Each night in November, a group of mischievous dinosaurs come to life. Since 2012, Refe Tuma (@refetuma) and his wife Susan from Kansas City, Missouri, have turned November into “Dinovember” (@dinovember), using toy dinosaurs to create and photograph imaginative scenarios for their children. “It’s like Christmas everyday,” says Refe. “We started to see our kids were looking forward to coming downstairs—and then instead of just flopping in front of the TV, they would start playing.”
What started as a way to make their children smile caught the attention of the wider Instagram community, who now participate using the #dinovember hashtag. Refe and Susan gathered contributions into a book, What the Dinosaurs Did Last Night .
“We’re inviting people to start to think about creativity and encouraging imaginative play with their own children, whether with dinosaurs or something else,” Refe adds. “It’s about how we can help our kids maintain that sense of innocent wonder and be creators of their own imaginative games and stories.”
