Local Lens: Documenting the Contrasting Scenes of Seoul with @seoul_stateofmind

In this series, local Instagrammers show you their favorite places to shoot around where they live. To see more photos and videos from Ken’s explorations around Seoul, follow @seoul_stateofmind on Instagram.

“I love that there are many places in Seoul where there’s juxtaposed architecture from different time periods—modern skyscrapers placed just behind a traditional folk village or a temple, for example,” says Gwangju Instagrammer Ken Lee (@seoul_stateofmind). Born and raised in London, he developed a deep affinity for South Korea when he moved to the country a few years ago. He began documenting the country’s scenery through his photography blog and more recently through his Instagram account.

When shooting photos around Seoul, Ken looks for elements of contrast that reside in the city. The futuristic Dongdaemun Design Plaza building and the traditional Ihwa Mural Village are two of his favorite places to shoot; both locations illustrate the city’s new and old settings. Haneul Park is another spot he enjoys exploring for the rich natural landscape that exists inside the busiest city of South Korea. As he reflects, “It’s really a mishmash of time, and I think it gives the city a lot of character and the best of different worlds.”
