Google has now begun rolling out the Android Lollipop 5.0 update for Nexus 4 handsets in Europe.
The 500MB update is being pushed over-the-air and several users have already reported receiving the new build online, but with that said, such rollouts are often completed in stages, so not everyone will necessarily be able to get the software just yet. If you’re a Nexus 4 owner, keep checking your phone every so often to see if you get a prompt, or alternatively go into your phone’s settings and tap the check for updates option.
According to reports, the update process takes longer the more apps you have installed, because the patcher goes to the effort of optimising every app you have aboard your phone to the Lollipop software. On a relatively clean phone it should take less than an hour.
If you do update your handset you’ll immediately notice the new Material Design aesthetic in pretty much every element of the UI. As well as this, however, Lollipop replaces Android’s previous Dalvik runtime environment with the new ART architecture, while that’s a forward-facing change to support things like 64-bit applications in the future, at the moment you should still notice an uplift in operating performance. Not only that, Android Lollipop’s Project Volta battery optimisations should ensure you get longer and more efficient battery life on a single charge than ever before.
