Scenes from the theater of American public life with @markpetersonpixs
To see more scenes from the theater of public life in the United States, follow @markpetersonpixs on Instagram.
“I like the larger-than-life characters that shape the American landscape,” says photojournalist Mark Peterson (@markpetersonpixs). “It’s like theater.”
Mark’s high-contrast, flash-filled images examine both power and poverty in the United States, and focus a spotlight on politicians and other public figures.
“I really like to get as close as I can to my subjects,” he says, explaining his approach. “I want the viewer to feel like they were in the same room with me at the event. I think this adds an intimacy to something that is very public.”
Mark sees Instagram as a space to engage in a global exchange of images and ideas. “To see the work of other photographers and artists, as they’re creating it, is amazing,” he says. “It’s like getting to see their proof sheets and watch the ideas grow.”
