“I love a house full of people and the scents of Christmas, log fires and cinnamon, the coziness and twinkling lights. I love the traditions, some that are generations old and some gathered along the way.”
A play on the 1780 Christmas carol, UK Instagrammer Julia Smith (@juliabesidethesea) created the #12daysoffaffing hashtag series last year to share her festive preparations from her home in Eastbourne. From baking the Christmas cake, to decorating the house and wrapping gifts, “Faffing is a bit like procrastinating,” she explains, “in this case in the most pleasurable way, taking time to enjoy the task in hand rather than going through the motions to get it done.”
Learning to sew at a young age and adapting ideas from her childhood, Julia says her mom has been a big inspiration with a sewing or knitting project always on the go. She says, “I hope that people are inspired to create a more handmade and personal Christmas, or have a go at any of my projects. These are the memories we are making as a family and I know that this is what my children will remember.”
