Lured into a World of Black and White with @abu888

For more black-and-white photography from Akihito, follow @abu888 on Instagram.

“I would not have been this hooked on black-and-white photography had I not known about Instagram,” says Akihito Nagata (@abu888) of Osaka, Japan. Over the past two years, Akihito’s photographic style has evolved significantly from daily captures of his life in color to monochrome portraits to carefully composed black-and-white street photography. “I was amazed by all the black-and-white photos I found on Instagram,” he says, “especially the architecture photos.”

Akihito says that shooting and editing a good black-and-white photo is mostly intuitive, but he does have a few tricks for creating a compelling shot: “When I want to emphasize the subject, I usually capture its silhouette,” he explains. “When I want the subject to be something subtle, I try to make it blend in with the surroundings.” He also experiments with bringing a big shot of a wall or a road into the foreground to add depth in the colorless scene. Editing is another important part of his creation process. He usually uses two or more editing apps, as well as Instagram’s creative tools to make just the right adjustments to the brightness and tone. “With black-and-white photography, you get to create a mixture of reality and fantasy,” he continues, “and that is what fascinates me the most.”
