“I had a second chance at life and I wasn’t going to take it for granted,” explains Andri Tambunan (@andritambunan), describing the life moment in which he became a photojournalist.

On a backpacking trip across Asia in 2008, the Indonesian-born amateur photographer found himself at the center of a terrorist attack in Mumbai, India that captured the world’s attention.

“I met some friends at my hostel and we went to grab some beer at Café Leopold in the Colaba District. We looked at the menu and discovered that the price for a glass of beer was 50 cents more compared to a local dive nearby, so we went there instead. Thirty minutes later, two terrorists opened fire inside the café killing many patrons. I was across the street when everything happened. Hiding behind a glass door I saw the shooters walk calmly toward the Taj Mahal Hotel after gunning down a shop owner. After they left I ran to the Café; I had my little camera and I started taking pictures because I thought it was a crime scene and I wanted to preserve the evidence.”

Realizing that he had found his calling, Andri returned to Indonesia the following year. He embarked on long-term photographic project to fight stigma and discrimination against people living with AIDS and HIV in Tanah Papua. “The region has the highest HIV/AIDS infection rate outside of Africa and it’s 15 times higher than the national average,” he says, explaining his mission. “HIV/AIDS is still viewed as a dishonor and a sin, thus many people are afraid of being ostracized from their family and community.” Last year, Andri received the Photo Philanthropy (@photophilanthropy) Activist Award to continue his work, which he distributes for free to activists, government officials, and aid organizations.

Andri is a founding member of SE Asia Live (SE Asia Live), a collaborative network of photographers across Southeast Asia.
